India is also known as land of agriculture. Agriculture, with allied sectors, is not only the largest livelihood provider in India, but also the dominant sector of our economy. Today India’s agriculture has become globalised and the idea of integrating Indian agriculture with the world economy is getting support. India has enormous potential as an exporter of agricultural commodities ranging from mushroom to flowers, spices, cereals, oilseeds and vegetables. With the commercialization of agriculture and horticulture there are varied opportunities for research, teaching, salaries job as well as entrepreneurship. While salaried jobs with various government and private concern provide a regular income, entrepreneurship can generate handsome profits.
Animal scientists inspect and grade livestock food products, purchase livestock, or work in technical sales or marketing.
An extension agents or consultants, animal scientists advices agriculture producers on how to upgrade animal housing facility properly, lower mortality rates among their animals, handle waste mater properly, or increase the production of animal products, such as milk or eggs. The industry needs skilled professionals with new ideas, new ways of learning and production.
Beside the research and higher academics, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and state public service commission is largest service provider of agriculture graduate and post-graduates.
In private sectors Tata chemicals, IFFCCO, ITC, Mahyco-Monsato, MONSANTO and Reliance, Fresh are providing good option for graduates and post-graduates, Now a day’s beside traditional agriculture, Floriculture and Medical forming is providing greater opportunity for agriculture entrepreneurship.
Like any other job profile, the pay packet largely depends on your academic qualification, your area of specialization and the institute from where you have earned your degree. Fresh graduates in this field can generally bag a monthly salary in the range of Rs 15000 to Rs 25000.
It has been observed that candidates with a master degree in Agriculture get a better starting salary as compared to graduate students. With an increase in the level of experience, there is abundant scope. Job growth is immense in this field.
In Indian context,, Governments are more focusing on research and teaching in the field of agriculture and allied sectors are established Department of Agriculture Research and Education (DARE). With 99 ICAR (the Indian Council of Agricultural Research) institutes and 65 agriculture universities spread across the country this is one of the largest national agricultural research system in the world. Apart from ICAR, DARE has 1 Central Agricultural University in Imphal, and almost 60 state agricultural universities throughout the country.
