The term zoology is derived from two words: “Zoo” and “logy”. Zoology focuses on the studies relating to animals. It mainly includes the study regarding the structure, evolution, embryology, taxonomy, behavior, and distribution of living and extinct animals. It is the branch of biology that relates to the animal kingdom, including the structure, embryology, evolution, classification, habits and distribution of all animals.
Zoology is present in medical laboratories, wildlife rehabilitation centers, hatcheries, agricultural departments, museum services, conservation agencies, scientific civil services, and media, environmental or ecosystem management sector, environmental consulting firms, and so on.
The genetic and microbiological research area of zoology also provides vast scope for the M.Sc Zoology aspirants. The demand for zoology is increasing day by day due to faster growth of the industries.
Since Zoology is a vast field of Life Science, the job opportunity in government sector are also enormous as that in the private sector. Various government departments such as the UPSC, SSC, state PSC, etc conducts examination for recruitment of the candidates.
Many opportunities are available in forensic science department also. Those having interest in research field can look out for suitable opening for various research organizations such as BARC, ISRO, etc.
Zoologist recruited in government agencies particularly Central and state pollution control boards get Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 per month. Candidates with experience and graduation degree receives a salary anywhere between Rs 15,000- Rs.30,000
Candidate with a postgraduate degree may start with a decent salary range of Rs. 35,000- Rs 50,000 and with Ph.D it becomes Rs 50000 – Rs 75000
